Today we celebrate the birthday one of the most magical Gurus known as the Lord of Miracles and give him our most sincere prayers. Guru Ram Das’ inspired story of how he became the 4th Guru is an incredibly touching tale that reflects his grace, pureness of heart and divinity. Guru Amar Das, the 3rd Guru, had to pick between his two sons in laws, Ram Das and Rama, to take his place. He decided to test them both for their holiness and purity.
He gave them each the same task of building him a platform so he can watch people work where a holy tank was being built. They both began building him separate platforms as requested. After they finished, Guru Amar Das told them both that he was not satisfied with their work and that they needed to rebuild it. Each attempt was met with the same dissatisfaction and they were instructed to tear down their work and attempt again with better care. Rama angrily gave up after the 4th try expressing that the Guru had become old and says one thing and changes his mind each time.
On the other hand, Ram Das continued to build and tear down his platforms dutifully seven more times and was instructed to tear it down seven times. Finally Ram Das just fell at the Guru’s feet and said, “I am a fool. I fail to understand your orders properly. Let me try once more. Perhaps I may succeed.” Then Guru Amar Das hugged him and announced that “Ram Das is the perfect being. He is in every way fit to take my place.” When we connect to the divinity of a guru, we start to see our potential as human beings.
The merging with the guru spirit allows us to stay faithful in our quest to connect to the divine and be the best we can possibly be. To let go of ego, wants, needs and be of humble service to all whom we encounter in our journey. Everyday becomes about how can I better serve? Everyday becomes about how can I merge more fully with the divine within? ✨🙏✨🙏✨🙏
